Manual Treadmills - Are They Still Useful? by Daren W. Chow

In today's world, almost everything is powered by electricity. Manual treadmills appear to have gone the way of the dinosaur. Are they still useful? Let's take a look at how a manual treadmill works.

As the name suggests, a manual machine depends entirely on the user (which is you!). There is no need for a power source. It has a frame and a running belt and that's about it. You can change the incline if you want to. But remember, once you set it, you can't change it while you are running (no console, remember?). You have to get off the machine physically and change the incline, then get on the machine again.

You never want to do that because starting a manual machine can be quite a challenge. Since there is no motor, the machine needs you to provide the power for moving the belt. You need to push harder during the start of the run to gather enough momentum for the belt to move to the speed you want. After that, all you need to do is to continue to provide constant power to attain constant speed.

But if you get tired and start to slow, the belt slows down as well. If you run out of energy and you stop, the machine stops too.

A key advantage of having a manual machine is that it's not dependent on electricity. If a storm causes a black out, you can still workout on a manual treadmill. Or if your modern treadmill breaks down, you can still depend on the trusty backup treadmill. So are manual treadmills useful? Yes, in some ways, they are.
